The Assistant Housekeeping Officer in coordination with the EMS Program Manager develops and administers a formal, systematic internal review plan for reviewing and appraising the effectiveness of each phase of EMS activities. The Assistant Housekeeping Officer in coordination with the EMS Program Manager is an integral member of the Environment of Care Rounds throughout the medical center complex, reporting, and directing the follow up of EMS issues to ensure timely correction of any identified deficiencies. Serves as the backup medical center's Sanitation Officer and in this capacity provides technical advice to top management. Assists the EMS Program Manager in the development of standards for the handling of toxic, radioactive and highly contagious bio-hazardous waste to assure the medical center complies with local, state and federal regulations. The Assistant Housekeeping Officer in coordination with the EMS Program Manager assists in the establishment of standards and criteria for environmental sanitation that are fitted to the particular needs and problems of this Medical Center, Clinics and CBOCs. The incumbent improves technical procedures and standards that create and preserve a clean, sanitary and aesthetic environment for patient and staff. Without a high level of sanitation of the medical center, the healthcare environment venues are opened to cross-contamination, potential high incidences of patient and employee infection and negative press from the media. An effective EMS program has a direct impact on patient and employee morale. It also creates a positive public relations image with the community, veterans' organizations, local, regional and national dignitaries, and the news media. The incumbent ensure all housekeeping staff maintain a highly clean environment as instructed by VHA with regards to National Standards of Cleanliness. The incumbent operates under the basic regulations and laws of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VHA has broad programs, policies and objectives that require the Asst. Housekeeping Officer to implement procedures required to meet the particular needs and objectives of the local medical center. The incumbent is responsible to respond to veterans, management, medical professionals, Service Chiefs and internal/external customers by furnishing effective support, which will facilitate the achievement of the overall missions of VHA, VISN 6 and the Durham VA Medical Center. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Experience that demonstrated a practical working knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, biology, and bacteriology as applied to environmental sanitation, infection control, and to the choice and use of antimicrobial agents in the disinfection, sanitization, and/or sterilization of surfaces and equipment. Experience in laundry and linen management. Experience in interior design management. Experience that demonstrated a knowledge of waste management, including the requirements relating to hazardous, toxic, and infectious wastes and provisions for their final disposition. Experience that demonstrated knowledge of pest management, including alternative methods of control and the selection and application of chemicals.
