Registered Nurse- CLC Part-Time
The program is designed to provide optimal comprehensive resident care within available resources and is consistent with the Medical Center and Nursing Service mission, philosophy, and goals. The length of stay for veterans in the unit may range from a few days to several years. The length of stay is determined by the individual needs of the veteran, potential for rehabilitation, and availability of resources for discharge to the least restrictive environment. Discharge planning and patient/family education is initiated upon admission and continues throughout the patient's stay in the CLC. The CLC has an interdisciplinary team that includes staffing representing Nursing, Dietary, Social Work, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians. The interdisciplinary team meets each week to discuss care planning and needs of patients. Nurses are competent in the management of patients with complex diseases such as Diabetes, CHF, COPD, Cancer, and Dementia. Staff receives education in other areas, including pain management and end of life care. The 4 (four) key quality characteristics of the RN role are as follows:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Minimum of 1-year nursing home experience at the SNF level, in the role of RN or LPN; Demonstrated ability to work effectively with patients, families and other members of the interdisciplinary team; Demonstrated skills in decision-making, sound clinical judgment and critical-thinking abilities; Demonstrated ability to use computer systems in support of patient care delivery. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level sufficient to provide safe and effective nursing care. The incumbent should have the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients.)
