Social Worker (Inpatient Acute Care)

The Medical Acute Care Inpatient Social Worker is responsible for provision of a full range of social work services, to include but not limited to, case work, individual, family and group counseling (e.g. coping and dealing with the loss and grief experiences in disability, terminal illness and death), discharge planning, case management and other services as appropriate for Veterans on inpatient acute medical units Provides consultation, education and linkage to veterans and families on internal and community resources, advance directives, organ donation and VA benefits in order to maximize the Veteran's independence, health and well-being Provides consultation and education to medical residents on social work practice and VA policy and procedure Acts a as liaison between VA and community resources, to include marketing and public relation duties as needed; actively working to maintain and develop relationships with those entities to ensure ease in access for the Veterans they care for Consistently communicates treatment coordination status with the care lines to facilitate continuity of care for Veterans throughout their inpatient stay Participates in weekly team meetings and serve on committee(s) or workgroup(s) as deemed necessary by the service manager Maintains data and statistical compilations to comply with JCAHO, VA and medical center policy and procedures Participates in a rotation of on-call or coverage social workers, including modification of tour of duty to accommodate patient care needs on weekends Independently assesses the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family and interdisciplinary treatment team Independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds Possesses basic skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking Possesses knowledge of community resources, making appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and the ability to coordinate services Independently conducts psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds Possesses knowledge of psychosocial treatment and ability to independently implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals Independently provides counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals, groups and families Possesses knowledge in the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures; including acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology Provides consultation services to other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment Provides orientation and coaching to new social workers and social work graduate students Serves as a field instructor for social work graduate students who are completing VHA field placements Independently evaluate his/her own practice through participation in professional peer review case conferences, research studies, or other organized means Possesses skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking, especially those programs in use by VHA Work Schedule:

Be a citizen of the United States. Education:
Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Licensure:
Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. English Language Proficiency:
Must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Grade Determination:
GS-9 Social Worker Experience, Education and Licensure:
None beyond the basic requirements. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. At the GS-9 level, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Ability to work with Veterans and family members from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds utilizing counseling skills. (b) Ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the Veterans problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed. (c) Ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques. (d) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies. (e) Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. Experience:
Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings. OR Education:
In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. (d) Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. (e) Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
