Our client is seeking a Senior Director or Vice President, Engineering Biology, to support the commercialization of biobased products.
This position will lead the efforts of the engineering biology team which includes the following functional areas:
strain engineering, metabolic engineering, protein engineering, and bench scale fermentation.
The VP Engineering Biology will have demonstrable success in building high throughput and automated workflows and teams.
They will understand the levers of a successful biotechnology business, including best practices and strategies for product development, troubleshooting development challenges, and collaboration in transitioning development activities into a suitable manufacturing environment.
The position will report to the CEO and will collaborate with the senior leadership team to define company goals and to deliver against those goals across all projects, internal and external.

Responsibilities Manage the conduct of science with proven systems that ensure the highest quality and rigor of scientific approach while also maximally leveraging the companys unique technology platform.
A successful candidate will be able to rapidly understand the companys unique technology platform, will be able to articulate how its approach to engineering biology is differentiated, and most importantly will be able to learn new ways of working that may be a significant departure from their past experiences.
Provide scientific and technical leadership in critical disciplines including strain engineering, metabolic engineering, protein engineering, high-throughput approaches, and bench scale fermentation.
Responsible for defining and delivering on research & development goals, ensuring satisfactory turn-around-time of multiple projects in the product pipeline.
Responsible and accountable for departmental budget, project coordination and long-range planning.
Recruit, manage, and mentor innovative scientists and engineers.
Identify appropriate development opportunities for team members, building on the strengths available and complementing the skills base as needed.
Provide the business acumen needed to make key product development decisions and convey the impact of those decisions to diverse stakeholders including the R&D team, the management team, and the Board.
Responsible for maintaining effective relationships with strategic partners, customers, suppliers and regulatory agencies in Europe, the United States, and additional geographies as needed.
Ensure all research and development activity meets high standards of ethics, safety, scientific rigor and integrity.
Proactively identify and implement program improvements by setting goals and reporting on progress towards goals.
Remain current on industry trends and new technologies.
Provide scientific review and recommendations for potential product and technical opportunities as requested.
Successful tech transfer management, both internal & external.
Ensure that intellectual property generated in R&D is captured, documented, and filed with support from the legal team.
Qualifications A Ph.
D.
in Chemical Engineering or a related field is required.
10
years of relevant experience in high throughput engineering of biology is required.
Demonstrable success in engineering of E.
coli required.
Additional experience in successfully engineering other industrial strains (particularly yarrowia), preferred.
Outstanding record of technical proficiency, creativity, and effective cross-functional collaboration.
Understanding of techno-economic analysis (TEA).
The ability to inspire colleagues and deliver results in a mission-driven, quick decision culture of a start-up culture.
Outstanding written, verbal communication and presentation skills required to communicate to scientific, business, and lay audiences.
Must have experience in leading the engineering biology development activities for an organization with multiple products up to and including commercial launch.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team and manage multiple projects in parallel.
Demonstrated success in transforming strategy into outstanding execution for a robust product pipeline.
Demonstrated ability to setup, evaluate, and improve (as needed) lab, personnel, and equipment to optimize efficient delivery of products and processes.
Time to market is critical.
Demonstrated ability to work with DSP and engineering teams to ensure best results move to commercial production in a timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to work with business development to identify and develop molecules to meet market and customer demands.
Strong structural and analytical problem-solving skills.
Ability to provide direct reports with clear business objectives, performance metrics and strategy.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills.
